DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

  • There were 12,700 reports of Domestic Violence made to the police in Orange County in 1998 alone.
  • In California, 50% of all women murdered were killed by a husband or boyfriend.
  • More women are injured as a result of Domestic Violence than are other reasons including rapes, muggings, and car accidents.

TEEN PREGNANCY

  • In Orange County 42 of every 1000 teens gave birth to a baby in 2000; in Santa Ana and Costa Mesa the rate was more than 90 out of 1000.
  • In California 48 of every 1000 teens gave birth to a baby in 2000; 66% of babies were born to Latina moms.
  • The number of children who get pregnant before the age of 13 has doubled in the last decade.
  • 25% of California’s teen births are second and third babies and the mothers are still teenagers.
  • In the United States two-thirds of babies born to teens are born out-of-wedlock and never finish high school.
  • The U.S. has the highest teen birth rate in the industrialized world, and California has one of the highest in the nation.
  • Each week in California, eight teens are murdered, nine die in car accidents, two commit suicide and 1,139 become mothers.
  •

  • As of May 2000, Orange County has 398 gangs with approximately 19,000 members
  • 54 billion dollars per year is spent on the incarceration of prisoners in the United States, 200 million is spent on prevention programs upon their release and 2/3 are re-arrested within 3 years.

INFLUENCE OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE

  • Nearly ½ of all substantiated child abuse cases are associated with parental alcohol or drug abuse
  • It is estimated that one in every four children in the United States (28 million) are living in a household with an alcoholic adult

ECONOMICS

  • In 2000, the Orange County welfare assistance program CalWorks handled 20,000 cases involving over 45,000 children. In 2001, nearly 2,800 families will reach their two-year limit on CalWorks eligibility.

CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE

  • One in four female children will be molested by age 18 and one in six males
  • One of every seven victims of sexual assault reported to law enforcement agencies were under the age of six
  • Frequently, the person who sexually molests a child is also a child

CONCLUSION

Child abuse kills more children in America than do accidental falls, choking on food, suffocation or fires in the home.

Women and Children are safer outside of their homes than inside.
